XIV CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE MEDICINA HIPERBÁRICA Y SUBACUÁTICA

Unos 150 congresistas procedentes de todas las partes del mundo se congregaron durante la  primera semana de Octubre, en el magnifico Hotel de la época colonial  "Westin St Francis", en el centro de San Francisco, una maravillosa ciudad en la que reina una gran tranquilidad.  Simbólica representación española  reducida al representante del CRIS-UTH del H. de la Cruz Roja de Barcelona y al representante de “MEDISUB Institut de Recerca Hiperbàrica” de la Clínica Juaneda de Palma de Mallorca. El Congreso se realizó en Inglés en su totalidad. Impecable organización.

Las jornadas de trabajo se repartieron en 5 salas de conferencias en las que se desarrollaron un total de 70 conferencias y se presentaron 71 pósters.

Durante el primer día se realizaron un curso de Post-grado y varias sesiones de trabajo "workshops".

Postgraduate Course: Introduction to Hyperbaric Medicine

Workshop I:  HBO & Cerebral Palsy

En esta sesión de Trabajo se realizo una mesa redonda dirigida por Jim Joiner editor del Libro titulado "The procedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain Injured Child"  en esta mesa redonda participaron los mas ilustres y experimentados  hiperbaristas de todo el mundo, principalmente estadounidenses y canadienses, Cabe destacar Philip James, Pierre Marrois, William Maxfield,  Paul Harch, Peter Rosenbaum, Michael bennet, Seteven Miller, George Hart, expusieron sus puntos de vista de sus experiencia algunos  a favor otros en contra, la mesa fue tan interesante como controvertida..

Workshop II:  Hyperbaric Chamber Safety

Tom Workman y  J. Sheffield presentaron los peligros y recomendaciones a tener en cuenta para evitar el riesgo de Incendios en el medio hiperbárico. Muy interesante exposición para los médicos que estamos dirigiendo o trabajando en Centros de Medicina Hiperbárica.

 Es imposible hacer una reseña de todo el material presentado, pero no renunciamos a enumerar, y ocasionalmente a comentar, las comunicaciones que hemos considerado de mayor interés.

En esta ponencia se presentaron varios de los 35 casos de Infartos Cerebrales embolígenos sufridos por los campeones y deportistas de elite de pesca submarina de las islas Baleares, llegando a la conclusión que aunque no utilicen recipientes de aire comprimido al llegar a ciertas profundidades (de hasta incluso 63 mts de profundidad) pueden sufrir las mismas patologías que los practicantes de buceo con escafandra autónoma, debiendo tener las mismas precauciones, debiendo realizar unos tiempos de desaturación según las tablas presentadas por el Dr. Juan M Batle..

A mediodía, un  representante de cada país, mantuvieron una comida "Governors’ Luncheon", en representación de nuestro país estuvieron los Doctores Jordi Desola como futuro presidente del XV ICHM y el Dr Juan M Batle como representante de España, en donde se decidió la sede del XVI ICHM, que por unanimidad se decidió que fuera China

El Sabado, ultimo dia del congreso se celebro la cena de clausura, en la cual tuvimos el gusto de deleitarnos con la exquisita cena y la amena conversación de los representantes mejicanos.

 

ANALISIS DEL CONGRESO

El anterior resumen del programa de trabajo se limita a enunciar los trabajos que fueron presentados.

Buscamos repetidamente la oportunidad de conocer la opinión de los mas prestigiosos autores europeos sobre las sorprendentes comunicaciones americanas. La sorpresa fue general, pues la sofisticación de la mayoría de trabajos y asimismo el indudable valor de los estudios clínicos, la mayoría de ellos randomizados y sobre un amplio numero de pacientes, permitía aceptarlos como válidos.

Regresamos de San Francisco profundamente impresionados, pese a comprender que muchas de las aplicaciones que hemos conocido son todavía impensables en nuestros escasos y limitados centros de medicina hiperbárica. La revelación del congreso, no obstante, ha sido no solamente descubrir el alto grado de desarrollo de la tecnología hiperbárica en los Estados Unidos, sino muy especialmente constatar la confianza indudable  que la medicina deposita en la Oxigenoterápia Hiperbárica OHB, avalada por el reconocimiento cotidiano de sus logros en los mas diversos campos de la medicina.
